SAVE SECOND BASE
Alpha Tau Omega

Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Save Second Base

The Brother's of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity at Florida Institute of Technology, kicked off their Second Annual Save Second Base Charity Softball Tournament on October 24, 2009 at the Florida Avenue Softball Fields in Melbourne, Florida. The tournament was comprised of 16 teams participating in a double elimination style competition with a $100 entry fee. Most of the teams were very generous and donated more money than the entry fee. The tournament had a goal of raising $2,000. Alpha Tau Omega shattered the goal by raising close to $3,000. Brother Jimmy Brennan and Brendan Barriere led the 2008 and 2009 tournaments. All of the brothers were there the day of the tournament to help with running the event, umpiring the games, selling raffles, and making the tournament a success. They received donations from the teams participating, other members of the community, and friends and family of the brothers.

Last year's tournament proceeds were all donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The tournament raised a total of $1,000 last year with 9 teams taking part in the event. So they decided to work with the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation to focus on the state of Florida and to be able to communicate with different representatives of the organization.

For next year's tournament, they plan on making the tournament bigger and more successful. They have a goal of reaching 32 teams and raising a total of $5,000. Brother Brandon Richgruber will be in charge of Save Second Base for the 2010 tournament. They are looking for ways to improve the tournament including gaining more support from the community and other organizations. Hopefully next year's tournament will take an entire weekend to accommodate all the teams and fit in all of the games. Eventually, Alpha Tau Omega wants to make Save Second Base an event that is known throughout the country and participated in by teams from New York, California, Texas, and other states. Ultimately, their goal is to improve this fundraiser so that it can raise approximately $50,000!

This summer I was privileged enough to intern for The Florida Breast Cancer Foundation (FBCF). Being that I attend The University of Texas at Austin, I really did not know what I was getting myself into. After being here all summer my understanding for this organization has grown drastically. I learned what FBCF stands for and the impact that the Florida Specialty End Breast Cancer License Plates have in their goal of ending breast cancer. I was able to attend health fairs, a benefit cocktail reception, and various networking events. Through all this and observing the dedicated FBCF staff, I was able to better understand the non-profit world that I had previously not known about. I was shocked to see how many big events such a small team puts together. It truly made me realize that with a passion for something, anything is possible, quality before quantity. My experience here has been life changing. Never in my life did I think that I would have such an interest for a non-profit organization. This summer completely changed my perspective as to what I want to do in my future. I hope to stay in contact with FBCF while I am in Texas and further aid in the cause of ending breast cancer through advocacy, education, and research.
